“Are you going to do experiments with my brain again?” Peri asked as the Rani tied to the bed.
“Don’t be a fool,” she replied. “You are far more useful to me intact than not. I’d rather not have to deal with the Doctor’s tantrums once he finds you here with me.”
“Then why am I being tied to this bed?” she asked, deciding not to mention the argument she had had with the Doctor before the Rani had found her which might mean the Doctor wouldn’t come back for her and foil the Rani’s experiments.
But he had come back for her after Yrcanos’ death, and he had taken her back to Krontep every year so she could stand vigil. (She had never loved Yrcanos like he had her (if she had had a choice, she would never have married him), but sometimes she wanted to remember all the good she had done for Krontep)
“I might not do anything to your brain, but I never said I wasn’t going to run experiments on you,” the Rani’s lip curled. “I thought you were a scientist.”
“I’m a botanist,” said Peri. “I thought you knew that CAGE gave me a degree in botany.”
“An honorary degree,” the Rani corrected. “That’s not quite the same.”
Peri sighed. “What are you going to do to me?”
The Rani’s almost imperceptible smile was the last thing Peri saw before her vision went black.
