Work Text:
Nothing mattered in this moment.
Aubrey was cracking eggs to beat them for frosting while Mari was needing the dough. It was a Saturday with just enough clouds to not be too hot. They were in Mari’s house (even if it looked off, it was nicer then her own house), just baking sweets. Looking at her girlfriend, Mari had the inner part of her hair dyed purple, though all the hair was in a loose braid, decorated with flowers Aubrey put there.
Even having had her for so long, Mari was beautiful.
When Aubrey had made stiff peaks from the eggs, she felt Mari hug her from behind. It was honestly adorable to her that she was now taller than her older girlfriend. The smell of lilies and fresh earth filled her nose as-
Fresh dirt?
No, no that wasn’t-
Mari must’ve worked in the garden. Yeah, that must be it.
The smell of the garden filled her nose as warmth spread throughout her body. Blood rushing to her face as Mari hummed some tune she couldn’t remember the name of. A giggle ringed and it felt like home. Slowly, Mari’s hands guided themselves into Aubrey’s, music filling her ears as she started dancing without resistance. They were slow-dancing in the kitchen (was it always so large?), simply enjoying each other’s presence as the music got louder. Mari must’ve put on some radio or CD when Aubrey wasn’t looking.
Mari put her head in the nape of Aubrey’s neck, and all felt right with the world.
She didn’t acknowledge the warmth sapping from Mari’s body.
Must’ve left open a window.
The music just got louder and louder and Aubrey started glancing around for that damn radio. It was making her uneasy in her quiet moment with Mari. Even if the smell of dirt started being stronger. Even as there was no light in the other’s eyes.
The music was deafening as Mari forced Aubrey to look at her.
Aubrey is sixteen now, why did Mari look younger?
Why was she so cold?
Why was she dead?
Mari simply smiled at her “Let go of this” and her eyes were forcibly opened, no warmth, no light.
All there was a rundown room, and a taste of something that would never be.
