Summary
“The Dark is fear,” Vos said, some of that fear bright in his eyes, “and it gives you a taste for the fear of others. Your own pain drives you to inflict pain. If this war goes on much longer it is going to break the galaxy to pieces.”
“You said… After Kamino you said this mission would be over soon. You said you were close.” Close to what?
Vos heard the unspoken question, and smiled. The same grim smile he’d seen from Kote, from ‘17, when they were right about something they’d desperately wanted to be wrong about.
“Close to figuring out how the Sith plan to kill the Jedi.”

Summary
She sat up from her slouch against the wall, studying him more intently. “Huh. The only footage in the news has you all in full armor. You're shorter than I expected.”
He snorted. “I’ll be sure to file a complaint with the manufacturer on your behalf.”
“Shit! That was unbelievably rude,” she sputtered, cheeks flushing, waving her hands as if to fan away her words. “It just slipped out, I’m so sorry! I promise I usually think before I speak, it’s just been a really long week. I’m– I’m Loren.”
“I go by Odd Ball.”
She relaxed a bit, and her smile returned. “Nice to meet you, Odd Ball.”
“Pleasure’s all mine.”

Summary
There was a painting in his mama’s bedroom of a woman with a hand full of fire.
Black curls were flung across the top of the painting, red skirts swirled across the bottom. The woman’s dark skin and dark eyes gleamed in the flickering light.
In one upheld palm, a flame danced. Red, orange, gold. Fingers curled around it; contained it. The woman did not look at the fire, she looked out of the painting, right straight at Elio. He could not tell if she was smiling or sneering, but the set of her jaw was firm. Stubborn. A challenge.
He was never sure what the challenge was, or how to answer it, but whenever he wandered into the bedroom in search of Mama he found himself standing before the painting, meeting the burning woman’s burning gaze.

Summary
I almost drowned once, in a river in Alaska. I swam too close to a waterfall and got sucked under. A friend’s father dragged me out by my shirt. I did not have much of a reaction to not dying. I sat on the bank with my friend and her mother and laughed, and then I was fine.
I don’t remember it anymore, the not dying. I remember the force of the water that pulled me under, the force of the person who pulled me out.
I remember laughing.
