Wrangling Guidelines > Tag Wrangling Basics

What is Tag Wrangling?

Tag wrangling is the process of organizing and connecting tags to make them easier to find and use. When you create a work, you can add tags for fandoms, characters, relationships, and freeform tags. Wranglers help ensure these tags are properly categorized and connected.

Canonical Tags

Canonical tags are the "official" versions of tags. When multiple users tag the same thing differently, wranglers connect these to a single canonical tag so all works show up in the same search.

Tag Types

There are four main types of tags on fanfiction.lol:

  • Fandom Tags: The fandom(s) the work belongs to
  • Character Tags: Characters appearing in the work
  • Relationship Tags: Relationships between characters
  • Freeform Tags: Tropes, themes, content notes, and other descriptive tags

Wrangling Guidelines

For detailed information on how to wrangle each type of tag, see the following sections:

  • Character Tags
  • Relationship Tags
  • Freeform Tags
  • Fandom Tags

General Principles

  • Use existing tags when possible - search before creating new ones
  • Be specific with character names (include fandom if needed)
  • Use standard relationship formats with appropriate separators
  • Add helpful freeform tags for tropes, themes, and content notes
  • Synonym tags that mean the same thing
  • Decanonize tags that aren't useful for filtering

This Archive

This is fanfiction.lol, a small archive with a focus on inclusivity and expanded tagging options. We have additional relationship categories (QPR, Getting Together, Casual) and all tags are canonical by default. If you have questions about tagging, feel free to contact the admin.
