Work Text:

In the Holiday household, going to any effort to celebrate an occasion that was not Christmas was what passed for teenage rebellion. If Carol had her way, the 31st of October would go entirely unremarked within their grounds, but it was engrained deeply enough in monster society that even she had to bow to the inevitable sometimes. Noelle hadn't managed to get permission to go trick-or-treating, but she was able to man a table set up just outside their estate's gates, laden down with candy of all persuasions. She’d spend a happy evening handing out treats to everyone else in town, and as far as she was concerned that was just as good as the alternative. Noelle herself was clad in a singed white coat and a pair of goggles, the traditional mad scientist attire.

Her mother's concern, or fear, or paranoia (depending on who you asked) had not vanished for the night. There was a camera over the gate, and she had insisted Noelle set up her table in clear view of it, but she was trying not to let that spoil her good mood. So far she had been assailed and wassailed by an assortment of ghouls, goblins and licensed characters from major motion pictures and her store of candy, though still impressive, was looking somewhat diminished.

At last, coming down the road, she saw two of the people she had been hoping for all evening. Kris was dressed as a witch, and both they and their mother had gone to some pains to distinguish the costume from those worn by certain other witches in a series of popular novels whose author had not covered herself in glory lately. Susie, for her part, had made use of a prodigious quantity of green bodypaint and a few old clothes she didn't want any more to turn herself into a classic Funkenstein's Creature.

They were each carrying bags of candy, and even as she looked Kris picked something from theirs and threw it at Susie. She easily snapped it from the air in her powerful jaws, though when she threw one at Kris to return the favour, they had to lunge for it. They did make it, without using their hands, and the smug look they gave Susie was easy to read even from a distance. Noelle hurriedly patted her costume down and arranged the table before they arrived. Naturally, it did not occur to her to ponder why she was trying to keep an assortment of halloween snacks as organised as her schooldesk; she just did it.

Susie leered at the scene, though whether it was more aimed at Noelle or at the tableful of sweets was hard to say. Noelle discretely pointed up at the camera, her hands blocked from its view, and mouthed "Sorry".

Kris, who had been there before, knew exactly where to stand to be just out of the camera’s field of view. They plucked their witches' hat from their head and flung it at the camera, where it hung and neatly blocked the view. If they had to tell Carol later that an errant gust of wind had snatched it from them and sent it astray, well, that was hardly the most complicated lie they'd had to tell recently.

Susie took her chance and hauled Noelle over the table for a deep, passionate kiss. She had the smaller girl held tight, though Noelle was of course making no effort to escape her grisly fate. The scientist looked like she was being devoured by her own creation, which Kris supposed was a stern lesson about meddling in things Monster Was Not Meant To Know. They pondered this as they heaved all the candy they could into both theirs and Susie’s bags. Someone, they reasoned, had to keep a sense of perspective around here.

Notes:

Hello and thank you for reading The Most Wonderful Night of the Year. It's my first time posting anything to this site, as I'm sure is true for a lot of people, and given the time of year I thought I might start by porting over a nice little halloween fic I first posted elsewhere last year.
