Chapter Text

After their traditional chaotic early morning routine, they finally settled into their traditional peaceful late morning routine. By far one of Nico’s favourite parts of the week. A rare moment of peace and quiet during the waking hours in their crazy little household, usually only allowed on the weekends.

He loved the insanity just as much, but that was exactly why it was such a nice change of pace. The contrast helped him remember exactly how much he loved his usual life before he got too used to it, and dared to stop realizing how lucky he was.

The sun was well on its way across the view outside the window. The shadows of the trees and neighbouring buildings turned away from it, equally slowly. Nico watched them carefully, intent not to miss a single move invisible to the naked eye.

Logan’s hand laid against his. The oldest of the habits. The slow rhythm of the tap of his finger was more tangible than audible, bringing another dimension to the shift of the warm sunlight and cool shadows in relaying the passage of time.

Nico took a sip of coffee, in full silence, savouring every bit of it.

The doorbell rang, breaking its usual habit of not doing that. Just like that, the rare peace got disturbed.

Butch stretched his old bones and hobbled over to the door before either of them moved, both still staring at the source of the intrusion in surprise, then at each other.

Logan stuck up a hand, a gesture to leave it to him, as he swiftly got up. Nico leaned onto his elbows to take in the new view.

He watched Logan open the door the same way he always did, casually if just a little bit hastily. He gripped onto his elbows tightly when Logan visibly froze at the sight of whatever was hidden right out of Nico’s, on the other side of the doorway.

Neither Logan or the mystery guest made a sound, leaving no clue as to who it may be. The only hint being that it was someone he’d clearly not expected to see. Logan’s knuckles whitened around the doorhandle. Eyes wide. Skin pale. He looked like he'd seen a ghost. Except… He hadn't even looked close to that when he'd actually seen a ghost.

Butch, however, wasn’t bothered in the slightest. He murmured an airy little rasp and walked out the door, welcoming the guest warmly.

Nico regained his composure and jumped up, almost knocking his chair over. Pushing through the nerves, he quickly made his way over.

Logan didn’t react when he grabbed his arm. Pushing through even more nerves, Nico quickly tore his eyes off of him to look through the doorway. Right at an equally shocked looking young girl.

She didn’t even seem to register him, eyes still fixed on Logan’s. Intense amber eyes. Her messy, dark blonde hair would have reached her shoulders if it didn’t stick out in every direction instead. She couldn’t be older than fifteen.

No way…!

Her hands shook. All of her shook. Even the bronze Xiphos hanging from her hip and the large backpack over her shoulder.

Butch bit into the ankle of her big black boot, with all the teeth and ferocity he had left.

Nico tightened his grip on Logan’s arm.

Logan let his hand fall off the doorhandle. “Who…?” he started weakly. “You… Look just like my mother” he finished in disbelief.

THE END

Notes:

Dear reader,

Please believe me when I say, thank you. I might have written this for myself, but all of you you, willing to listen to what I had to say was an incredibly reassuring surprise. Your presence, no matter how short or quiet, added a very welcome warmth to the process. Though I never met you, and never will, I will always be grateful.

I want to give my special thanks to my loving husband, and editor PanicPillow (Blogspot: Tabletop Curiosity Cabinet). Because without him, none of this would ever have seen the light of day.
Thank you, darling. So much. More than you will ever realize. Your tremendous help with this hobby is only one small example of the ways you have supported me. You inspired all tenderness in my fantasies. You are what makes life beautiful. I love you, in every single possible way anyone can mean those words.

To add just in case: You're free to use this story/these characters however you like. Spread it around wherever you like, for any reason (good or bad), rewrite everything so everyone has a handlebar mustache, translate it, etc. I'd love a mention so I can find it, but don’t really need credit. All I really ask is that you don’t impersonate me :)

If you're interested in the author's notes for the chapters, you can find them on Sufficient Velocity. Not that I didn't feel comfortable sharing here, but I know how tedious it gets to scroll over my massive villain monologues, and they're a lot easier to skip there.

As said in the tags, the next chapter, the last one, is just a drawing I made for the project and a little short story to go along with it.

Best wishes,

C3
