The Boy with Sadness in His Eyes

Summary:

Honami meets a mysterious boy at Saki’s birthday party.

Work Text:

Honami had met him at Saki’s birthday party when they were little kids. He was a shy boy who hid in the corner and only came out when the Tenma siblings called for him. Yet, Honami couldn’t forget him. She could never forget those striking eyes of his, bleeding with sadness.

The years passed, however, and Honami grew apart from Saki. She never saw the mysterious boy again, for their only connection was gone. Still, he entered her thoughts from time to time. She considered him her first childish crush.

So, Honami was surprised to see him again, at the same place she’d first seen him— Saki’s house. She’d mended her relationship with Saki, and now they were celebrating her birthday again. And there he was, the boy with sadness in his eyes. He was much taller, more robust. Most noticeably, however, his eyes now glimmered with hope. He was still soft spoken and idly hiding away in the corner, but he seemed more alive now.

Honami smiled to herself. She was glad.

“Hey, Saki-chan, I’ll take that over to him,” Honami found herself saying abruptly, pointing to the slice of cake that had just been cut and then to the boy who formerly had sadness in his eyes. She didn’t know what’d come over her, but she had the deep urge to talk to him. Her heart raced as she looked at Saki expectantly. The other girl simply gave her a relieved smile.

“Thanks, that’d be a great help!” she said, handing Honami the plate. Honami bowed and set off, leaving Saki to talk to the other guests.

Honami crossed the living room and approached the boy with delicate steps, as if she were afraid to finally meet him. If there was one thing she’d learned, though, it was to not let her fear control her anymore. So, she thrusted out her arm and handed the cake to him.

“Here, this is for you!” Honami said in a sing-song voice. The boy’s eyes widened slightly as they focused on her.

“Thank you,” he said softly, taking the plate from her. His voice was beautiful, rich like a singer’s.

“I’m Mochizuki Honami, and you are?” Honami introduced herself.

“Aoyagi Touya.”

Aoyagi Touya-san, huh? Honami thought to herself with pink cheeks and a grin. What a beautiful name.

Honami had a feeling this cake exchange, this meeting, would be the start of something very special.
