Temporary Predicament

Summary:

Kory gets turned into a vampire, something she didn't even think was possible. This presents some obvious problems.

Work Text:

Vampires were an Earth problem. Kory had assumed they were one that Tamaranians didn't have to deal with, like bacteria. Back home, they didn't have any equivalent to vampires, so it'd been a natural assumption that it didn't apply to her.

Furthermore, Kory's powers came from the sun. It shouldn't be possible for that to be turned against her. After everything she'd been through, it was far too cruel for the world to steal the light itself from her life. Never had she considered having to live the rest of her now-prolonged life without getting to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin, or see the watercolor painting across the sky as it set.

Obviously, she was wrong. It had happened after a fight with the fearsome five, where Jinx had managed to cast some spell on Kory. It hadn't seemed to do anything at the time, and the five of them were as easy to beat as always. Kory had assumed that Jinx had just miscast the spell.

Her teeth were already pointed, so she hadn't noticed that change. She'd thought it was strange that she was growing weaker— so she'd spent her time recovering indoors. It was much too obvious to deny when she finally made it into the sun, hoping to push past whatever she was sick with.

It was like she was being electrocuted from the inside out.

Something was very, very wrong. She'd asked Raven— Donna knew about magic as well, but she didn't want her to see Kory like this— who had been the one to realize: she'd been cursed with vampirism. Until Raven could find a way to reverse it, Kory would be a blood-sucking creature of the night.

She could imagine Robin having some sort of moral conflict over the issue. Even Donna probably would have struggled with it. Still, while Kory was learning the moral rules of Earth, her gut remembered how she'd been raised. She didn't see anything truly wrong with killing those she despised, and she had nothing but love for her allies. If it was her death or theirs, she would choose herself, so that when Raven found a cure, she could defend Earth with the Titans.

Until then, she intended to lay low. She'd moved out of Titan's tower— the glass wasn't helpful to her anyway— and within a week, got hired as a bouncer at some dive bar. Raven had her address, but the rest of the Titans only knew she was recovering from something. It wasn't a lie— she would be recovering, as soon as Raven found a way for her to start.

This was temporary.

As a bouncer, she'd gotten accustomed to human body language in a way that wasn't possible as a supermodel. There was no shortage of men who thought they could take her, or hit on her, or worse. When she went to kick them out, they often made themselves into her problem. Kory didn't make a habit of killing innocents. It was convenient that she needed someone to kill, and they took away any question off their innocence.

She had a routine. If they were normal, or in a group, she let them walk away. If they attacked her, she wouldn't use her powers— she'd tried that once, and didn't enjoy explaining where the fire had come from. Instead, she'd just use her strength to hold them still, and drain them dry within a few moments.

Raven updated her every few days, but hadn't had any luck in her search. Every day, Kory grew more anxious that Dick or Donna would find her. Dick would be devastated to learn what she'd been doing, and likely would try to incapacitate her— and if Kory had to choose between him or her, she wasn't sure what she'd do.

Donna would be so disappointed. She was the responsible one of the group, and while Kory understood that Donna was willing to kill in extreme circumstances, she also understood that Donna would never approve of what she'd been doing. They just operated off of different systems of morality.

The day the rest of the Titans found her, Kory would have to give up on her life returning to normal.

This was just a temporary predicament. It had to be. Any alternative was unthinkable.
