“I apologize. Perhaps I should have returned to the Bureau before the rain got so bad…”
“Why?” She tilted her head to the side. In the firelight, her features became sharper and the scar across her cheek looked more prominent. She looked fierce, and yet her expression was so soft, and that summed up her essence to him. He couldn’t resist smiling and taking her hand.
“I doubt you have another bed for me to use,” he pointed out, amused. She probably did have extra furs, and he could sleep on the floor if necessary, but he doubted his body would take kindly to that. He would be in pain the next day, surely, and he would rather avoid it if he could.
Eivor just grinned and raised an eyebrow. “Another bed? I would prefer to have you in my bed, Hytham. If that is acceptable to you, of course,” she added, and Hytham’s breath caught for a moment.
“Yes,” he said quickly, “yes, of course that would be acceptable.”
She laughed softly, relieved, and kissed him for the first time that evening.
A rainstorm forces Hytham to stay in the longhouse in Ravensthorpe, and he spends the night with Eivor for the first time...

Summary
“I’m sorry, Eivor, I shouldn’t have tried to fight Kjotve in your stead.” He knew she couldn’t understand him, but he felt he had to explain himself. The words were pouring out of him now. “I wanted to help you, I wanted to see him die both for your sake and mine, but it was about your family’s honor and it wasn’t my place. I hope you can forgive me, please.”
She squeezed his hand and touched his cheek, just a light brush of her fingers, and shushed him gently. She said something soft and comforting, and he tried to breathe evenly. His breath was wheezing from the effort of speaking.
He felt gentle hands on both sides of his face and she pressed a very brief kiss to his forehead. Then she left the healer’s hut.
After the fight with Kjotve, Hytham heals and recovers. Over the next months, he and Eivor become closer than he would've thought possible…
