âWhile I appreciate all of your efforts to keep me safe,â Optimus Prime said, glaring â glaring! â around the meeting room at his command staff, âI cannot condone sending other Autobots in to fight Megatron for me.â
âPrime, look, weâre just-â Ironhide started to say, but Optimusâs deep voice overrode his guardianâs.
âThe next time there is a battle, I will face Megatron, alone,â Optimus said in a tone that brooked no argument. âDo not intervene. Do not send Superion in my stead. Do not order Bluestreak to take shots at him from afar. If the leader of the Decepticons wants to fight me, then I will meet his challenge. Itâs only right. I will not have others fight my battles for me. Is that understood?â Optimus stared around the room once more, finding the optics of those who dared to meet his gaze. When there was no reply, Optimus stood up. âMeeting adjourned,â he said, and marched from the room.
After the door slammed closed behind the Prime, a silence fell over everyone gathered around the conference table.
Finally, Jazz leaned back in his chair. âYa gotta tell him, mechs.â
âWhat, that Megatron wants to permanently scar him to stake a claim over him?â Ratchet said.
Jazz nodded once. ââXactly,â he said.
Ironhide rubbed his face. He looked tired. âHe knows about 'Con culture,â he said. âHe knows about claiming. He just⌠I donât think he realizes thatâs what Megatronâs trying to do.â
âYeah, right,â Jazz laughed. Then, when no one said anything, Jazz frowned and looked around the table. âWait. Are ya serious?â
Ratchet sighed. âWhen Megatron scored Optimusâs chest at Sherma Bridge, it was obvious â to me anyway â what Megatron had done. Those gouges were deep and purposeful. ButâŚâ Ratchet shrugged. âI asked him if he wanted his windshield replaced⌠and he said yes.â
Jazz seemed to deflate a bit at that. âSo he rejected Megatron. No wonder old Megsâs been on a rampage lately.â
âI donât think it was a rejection,â Prowl said. He glanced at Ironhide, then at Jazz. âWhen we spoke to him about it later, I got the distinct impression he didnât realize what Megatron had done. Or...â Prowl hesitated, then added, "Or he is in denial about what Megatron's intentions are."
âHe doesnât have a hot clue, and he doesnât want a clue either,â Ironhide said in agreement. âHe just asked us to start planning our next moves.â
âI even pointed out that repairing the damage was likely to make Megatron even more dangerous, and Optimus said that was all the more reason for us to move swiftly with our next attack,â Prowl said. âIt was obvious he wasnât making the connection, or was refusing to make the connection.â
âWhy donât ya just sit him down and tell him like it is?â Jazz said. He looked around the table at the other three mechs incredulously. âLook, I know I havenât been an officer for long, but⌠If he knows about claiminâ maybe he just needs someone to tell it to him straight.â
âDo you really think we havenât tried?â Ratchet snapped. âBefore I replaced his windshield, I even said 'Megatron wants you.â And do you know what Optimus said?â He glared at Jazz. âHe said, 'Yes, he wants me dead, and I will not give him the satisfaction. Heâll have to do better than that.ââ Ratchet threw his hands in the air. âNo matter what I said, Optimus deflected. I get the impression he knows but⌠Heâs in complete denial.â
Jazzâs mouth hung open for a moment. âAnd even with all that, Megs is obviously still trying to get another claim in.â
Prowl nodded solemnly. âYes. That explains all of the recent attacks directly on our base here. The Decepticons have no chance of winning an encounter; rather, Megatron is simply trying to draw Optimus out of the base.â
Ironhide pinched the bridge of his nose. âNear as we can figure, Megatron must think that Optimus rejected his claim, so heâs been trying to get in another one. A better one.â
Ratchet covered his face and groaned. âI donât even want to think about what kind of damage that lunatic will inflict on the Prime this time.â
Jazz stared at the Primeâs empty seat in quiet contemplation for a full minute before saying, âFrag. Lovesick old fools.â
The other three mechs simply nodded in agreement.
