cant you hear? its calling

Summary

An introspective on Jae, and their relationship with Fairie.

Notes

cant you hear? its calling

They can still hear Fairie. Jae's never been put under a siren's spell, or even a vampire's persuasion, but they imagine it feels a lot like this.

It taunts them. When they're in class learning something or other, more often then not instead of the teacher's voice it is Fairie that they hear. Their performance in class has slipped, even with the pack helping them out with notes and study sessions. It's easier for them to read, since it's a different input that's registering, but even then they catch themself closing their eyes, starting to hum, and even standing up and walking, as if to get closer to Fairie.

They sometimes get the compulsion to get up. To stand, and walk towards the turnstile and open the door and let themself be drained. It's like it's them but not, as if they're sleepwalking but with a purpose, a purpose to give yourself to Fairie, pay back your homeland for what it has given you, isn't it gorgeous don't you want to stay here forever?

And sometimes it gets so loud, so loud and they can't do anything but listen and they're not compelled but all they can do is try to act as normal as they can until they can be by themself and hold their hands over their ears (it doesn't help) and try not to cry, and try not to cry loudly and attract attention when that inevitably fails.

They can hardly bear to walk outside most days, or some days even outside their dorm room, because what if the compulsion gets so strong and they can't stop themself from walking there and hurting anyone who tries to interfere. Those days are easier with someone from the pack, someone they can trust to be able to stop them, and even though they're still paranoid (is it paranoia if it's possible, if it's reasonable?) some of those days they can manage to be normal, be the Jae they were before Fairie.

And some days, they can't hear Fairie at all, and those can be the worst days, because they remind them of normal, of peace and quiet. Except now the quiet is too quiet, and their thoughts are too loud, and everything else is so loud even though it's normal, everything's normal, it's Jae who's acting weird. And when those days last, they worry. Because what if Fairie's asleep again, because they couldn't feed it, sustain it, give it the energy to grow and become life incarnate be strong enough. And what if they've been imagining it, if Fairie was never there at all, and they've been acting weird because something else is wrong with them. And that's the worst thought, because they know others have seen it as well, but what if those people are humoring them, because the only reason they're not in psychiatric care is because there's no way to legally put them in and there's so few places in the supernatural world and they can't be put in a human place. It's the worst, because if Fairie isn't there, then there's no chance of home, a true home that sings back to them far better than Earth can.

On other days, even though Fairie is quiet they can barely get themself out of their bed, because they can't stand who Fairie makes them. It makes them rude and drives them to insanity, and they can't understand why Fairie hasn't done this to any of the other fairies, and then they get mad at themself because thatsuch a selfish thought and they wouldn't want anyone else to go through this, this tearing of the self that they've gone through. And they think about the fairies living on Earth, how they arrogantly used magic and could have harmed that entire community, and the Head Fairy there was so upset at them and she would have been in the right to punish them because she's the Elder. And being with the other fairies had calmed Fairie, and they were so clearheaded, and then they had to ruin it by having the Head Fairy take them back to Fairie. They worry that it was all a ploy by them, that she was right that they were power-hungry. They think about how she would have been within her rights to leave them there, to leave them at Fairie and let them drain, drain until their magic was gone, until their body was gone and consumed and there would be nothing left of them but the memories their pack had of them. It's paralyzing, agonizing over their every move and their brain, their not-compelled brain twisting everything under a veil of self-hatred.

Most days, they only hear Fairie faintly. Enough that its presence is there but not enough to hinder them. They can smile, they can talk with everyone else, they can even use their magic without feeling Fairie looming over them, calling them to use their magic on their homeland until there's none left.

And sometimes, on those days, they feel okay.
