Chapter 1: highschool is killin' me

Chapter Text

BEEP BEEP BEEP

Player woke up to the sound of the old alarm clock. They are not used to this at all.

They sat up.

The first things they could process was the morning sunshine from the window, and the alarm still going off. Birds chirped, like those cartoons, signifying a new day. Just great. They'd better turn off the alarm so it doesn't wake their dad. Not sure if it actually would, if anything, he would probably sleep through the fire alarm, or even maybe a flood. That's a bit of a stretch though.

They turned off the alarm and sat up, already forcing themself out of bed. To stay in bed for a second too long is just asking yourself to fall right back asleep.

Today is a big day, apparently. Player for the first time in who knows how long, has to go to public school to do "better". They're sure they're fine. Why would they want to be in an establishment with a bunch of other kids their age? They'll probably make fun of them for walking weird, or hit them with their car as young reckless drivers do.

Why would someone do that?... That's not even realistic-

Shut up.

Doesn't matter.

What's seven hours in the face of eternity?

Seven hours for five days?

Every...Everyday.

Huh.

Doesn't matter. Why does this matter? They don't care. Nothing matters. They just have to deal with it.

...

Before they know it, Player is already outside. Ready. Ready to leave. It's so cold. Did it rain last night? Shouldn't they have heard the rainfall? The skies are clear. Too clear. It's horrible. The way light reflects off of the wet asphalt and directly into their retinas. It burns. So much. Why does it hurt so much? They want to just go inside already. It's cold. It's cold and their head hurts.

Seems they'll just have to walk there squinting, hoping not to step into the path of a hypothetical oncoming car. Their vision is kind of blurry. Oh well.

The walk is as grueling as it can be. As much as Player would like to just get it over with and pick up the pace, they decide to walk as slowly as possible. Then just maybe they can relax. Just to make their first impression as a lazy failure. So it wont be surprising later on. And to delay the inevitable and somehow enjoy their walk. The decorative trees lining the road are pretty. The birds are singing… It's peaceful.

It'd be more peaceful if they didn't have somewhere to be. They're so going to get yelled at. What if people hate them? What if people laugh at them? Or even worse, are dissapointed in them?

Well. It can't be THAT bad, right?

They're already late. So late.

Hopefully no one will notice them.

Well that ended quickly. Too quick. They stopped in front of the gates of the school.

Player expected there to be other people, why wouldn't there be? It's a school. There's going to be people.

But there's just so many.

They can feel eyes on their back as they enter campus.

They have no idea where anything is. Surprised that they got this far. They try to hurry and find the office. The office should have maps. So then maybe they don't have to find someone who can-

OW.

They assume they have ran into a wall. Embarrassing. Hopefully no one noticed.

Wait no. Why'd they hear something hit the floor?

"are you blind."

Oh shit. That's not a wall.

"are you just going to stand there? ugh. who even are you?"

They don't even want to look up.

"hello? are you also deaf?"

Okay if they just…pick up all the stuff on the floor… this guy will leave them alone…and not steal their lunch money…or something.

Hurry…hurry…so many pencils everywhere…accident…

They scrambled back into their feet, hands shaking, fumbling with hallway guy's backpack, which is quickly snatched from their grasp. Something sparkly and metallic in the corner of their vision.

They look up, barely getting a good at him, didn't help his face was mostly in shadow. He already gone.

Awesome!

Now that that's over, they can go find the office, but how?…

They look even more up and there's literally a sign that says in a large font "OFFICE."

Well.

That was easy.

They walk to the other side of the hallway, looking around to not run into someone else/

The moment they enter the office they expect everyone to snap their attention onto them, but no one even looks at them.

They wait for one of the office ladies to acknowledge them. Any minute now.

Any minute now…

Any minute now.

Ugh. It's okay. This will be over soon.

Player cautiously gets closer to the closest desk, and waits for the office lady to notice them. She doesn't. They're right there.

They wave at her then eventually start tapping on the desk.

She looks up, "Oh, I didn't see you there. What do you need? Are you alright?"

"Am I alright??"

"Do you need to see the counselor?"

No! What's wrong with her?

Oh.

They're shaking still. For some reason.

They shake their head. They're fine.

"Well…Alright then. What are you doing here? I haven't seen you before."

Yeah.

"You probably don't know where your classes are, huh?

Yeah, like that isn't what I'm here for. Please hurry.

She reaches a stack of papers on the other side of her desk, taking her sweet time to look through each page, licking her thumb periodically.

Why.

"Okay, heres the map. What's your name so I can…"

They grabbed the map and escaped, not letting her finish speaking, not really caring too much if it came off as rude. For now.

They were now standing in the hallway again, close to the wall so they don't run into another person. Hopefully they don't have to see that guy from earlier or that lady again anytime soon, they don't like them. The map isn't too complicated to understand. It's just… covered in numbers! And letters! And names they don't recognize! That's. Fine.

Now they just need to remember what classes they've got. It should just be on their schedule. They check their pockets…

…

SHIT.

They reluctantly turn around and head back into the office.

Of course now she notices them. Recognized.

"You need something?"

They give a quick nod, avoiding her gaze. Picking up a pen and writing their name on a scrap piece of paper. They just need their schedule.

She hums and starts quickly typing on her keyboard. Her long nails making an obnoxious tapping sound. Player wants to rip their ears off!

They stand their tapping their foot and occasionally walking in a short circle. It's like they've been in here for the past twenty minutes, but it probably hasn't actually been that long.

This sucks.

They hear a printer making printer sounds. In the printer. The printer with paper in it. Printing.

"Alright. Your schedule is going to be printing soon.

They watches the printer. It finally makes that noise that means its finished. You know. The noise. They take out the uncropped schedule and turn back to the office lady. She isn't looking. Whatever.

They look down at their schedule and map, already trying to make their way to their first class, which was Biology in room 2-H039 (i dont remember how room numbers work bare with me). Which was down the hallway, or something, they can't really tell. It probably didn't matter if they were in a hurry or not.

They look at the room number thing that reads "2-H039," then they look at the map that also says 2-H039. Then back and forth. Making sure they aren't at the wrong one. Then put the labels next to eachother. They both say "2-H039." Is that really what it says? Their eyes sorta aren't working today. Strained.

…Just making sure.

They reach for the door handle.

Locked.

Just great.

Now they have to pull attention to themself.

…Knock knock knock…

The door opens.

It's opened by a person Player doesn't recognize. Probably.

Why is this total stranger just standing there? Just let them in.

"you again? aren't you like, a toddler?"

Hallway guy.

Hopefully they were wrong about this being their class.

…And I'm not a toddler??

They shake their head

They look up at him, still avoiding direct eye contact. He is taller than them and wearing something shiny , basic skull t-shirt (hello Sid) and jeans, which isn't really a normal thing to be wearing in the current weather situation. Player is wearing a whole ass winter coat, and this guy is dressed like it's time to go to an outdoor mall. Still can't see his face due to the contrast of the hospital type over head lights with his visor, or anything, really. They don't need to see his face to know he's glaring down on them.

"uh. yeah, whatever. come in, i guess."

He retreats to the opposite side of the room. When they walk in it's completely silent, hundreds (probably not) of eyes on them now. At least the lights are dim in the classroom.

Wait, why are the lights dim?

The board.

Something something, group project. Presentation. Lord have mercy.

"HELLO, KID. WELCOME TO MY CLASS. YOU ARE TEN MINUTES LATE."

Ten minutes late? They were expecting way longer. Did they…Get to school on time? This teacher so damn loud.

"YOU'RE LATE. LATE, LATE. YOU'RE LUCKY YOU'RE NEW HERE, PLAYER.

Is this the time for name dropping? Everyone is looking at me…stop…

"SIT NEXT TO THE BLUE ONE."

They jump. Someone was right next to them, sitting on a stool desk right next to the door.

"Uh…"

They maneuver around the desk, climbing onto a stool right next to the blue kid. Who even is this? Someone's original character? This stool is so wobbly, this has to be a safety violation.

Blue kid whispers something, Player doesn't hear it.

Player is too busy in their head to notice everyone in the class, from what they can see in the dark room, is grouped up in teams of four. Oh no. Why on their first day? Why? Who even are these people?

"YOU. YOU THREE. YES, YOU. YOU TOO. YOU'RE IN A GROUP NOW."

They hear a chair being dragged across the tile floor, making a screeching sound that is getting closer. Of course it's hallway guy, again. They are somewhat able to make out now that the sparkly thing hallway guy is wearing some sort of chain, and also spiked cuffs, because of course he is. He kicks the chair right to the front of the desk and sits in it. But now he's lower than the desk.

"…"

"uh, i think i need to get a stool."

He scoots out of the chair, and turns to face the the aisle that leads to another, slightly ajar door that probably leads to the lab, but pauses when the blue kid sniffles.

"woah. are you, like, okay?

Player watches awkwardly from the side as the blue kid begins to loudly sob, trying to say something, but it just comes out as gibberish nonsense.

"I'm…" they cough "sorry, you- you didn't…"

Everyone stops chattering to stare at the group.

"YOU."

The teacher pointed a finger at hallway guy, who was trying to silently leave

"me?"

"WHAT'D YOU SAY TO THE BLUE ONE? AND YOU. YOU WERE BOTH BULLYING THEM AGAIN. YOU ARE PROBABLY ALSO TELLING PLAYER TO BE MEAN. OR SOMETHING. GO TO THE PRINCIBLE'S OFFICE."

Blue kid shakes their head hard enough to give themself whiplash.

"He didn't do anything!"

"LEAVE."

Before they know it, they are standing outside the classroom with hallway guy again.

The silence is pretty loud

Awkward.

This is the worst that has happened to them today thus far.

"we should probably go to the office now." He says pretty plainly, but breaking the silence, for some reason.

Player nods reluctantly

"yeah. i think that guy is crazy, or something. you'll get used to it, maybe."

Are you talking to me?

"cmon, let's go."

They ended up sitting next to each other in front of the principal, who looked suspiciously similar to their bio teacher from earlier, in an exchange in which hallway guy swore that he and Player didn't say anything to the blue guy from earlier. The principal only let them go after receiving a note from said blue person that said the same, to which it let them both go with a warning, but laughed at them when they left.

Neither of them know how much time has passed.

"this is your fault," he spat.

"do you do this on purpose? you didn't even say anything when we were in there. you could've said anything, and you didn't."

They try to keep a blank expression, they aren't used to being berated in any way, or especially stared down like this guy really seems to like doing. Maybe he's studying them.

"you aren't even going to say anything now?"

"…"

"that was kinda mean."

An apology??

"just, whatever."

Guess not.

He looked away though, so it finally felt like Player didn't have someone trying to look straight through them for once this whole day

"watch out for the ghost in the south wing bathroom."

??? I don't even know where that is.

"you're new here. there's like, a ghost in that bathroom. the one next to the gym. don't go in there."

"they say some kid was murdered by someone there, who wanted to know what it was like to kill. she killed someone no one would look for."

"it's said they found the body ages later. in the walls of that bathroom. because it smelled bad, of course. it would be rotting in there. except everyone thought someone just took a huge shit in there so bad the janitor didn't clean it, haha."

"i can't remember what they say what'll happen if you anger the ghost, maybe you get hit by a car or something."

"i mean, it's not like i'm scared. you probably are. but not me."

What are you going on about?

"wait, why am i talking to you? go away. go back to kindergarten, or something…because that's where you're from."

"…"

"what were we doing again?"

He checks his watch

"ugh, how long were we in there? it's already 11-something. lunch is soon."

"…i'll show you there, i guess. don't start thinking im your tour guide or something."
